As a builder for many years, I've had a long standing commitment to environmentally responsible building products and processes whenever possible, including the recycling of reusable building
materials. Over the past several years I have worked with Deconstruction Services, a division of
the Rebuilding Center of Our United Villages, a non-profit organization located in North
Portland. They have been a cost effective method of "deconstructing" a home that is undergoing a
remodel, renovation, or complete demolition.
Performed by hand, this method can salvage up to 85% of a building's materials for reuse. It is a
responsible alternative to the traditional "wrecking ball" method and its benefits include lowering
building removal costs, reducing the environmental impact of construction practices and keeping
quality used building materials from needlessly taking up valuable landfill space. Equally
important, is that it creates jobs and helps revitalize neighborhoods.
One of the big advantages of using Deconstruction Services, is when clients donate
their salvaged building materials, they may be entitled to a tax deduction. When Deconstruction Services has
completed their work, the client is provided with itemized written and photo documentation of the
salvaged materials that can be used for tax purposes. Simply put: it is a win-win for everyone
involved.
